Ways of Preventing Fleas in Pets

Most people love to keep pets in their homes and they are a good companion apart from that at times they can be affected by pests. These pets are affected by pests depending on the season and place that one lives. Some of the pests that will affect the pets are fleas which actually can be a big problem. In warmer climates fleas can be a concern all year long. Usually they are a concern for the pets and the family health. A resting time the pests can give someone together with their pets in the colder climates but it does not mean that they will not be back. Since they will always look for their next home during such times they will actually be back during the warmer season.

Fleas cause a lot of health concerns for the pets which include; flea allergy dermatitis, anemia and many more. Flea allergy dermatitis is a very common skin disease in pets such as cats and dogs which is associated with flea bites. A lot of itching and scratching is caused by the skin disease in pets and in turn leads to hair loss. Also associated with flea bites on the other hand is anemia. Weariness, pale skin, chills and shortness of breath can be signs of anemia in an animal. During peak seasons, a lasting impact towards the animals’ health and happiness can be achieved by avoiding the pet from full infestation from the fleas maybe. Noticeable skin problems such as hair loss, hot spots and rashes can be the signs that one’s pet has flea infestation. If the pet suffers from serious allergic reactions the saliva from fleas can cause this. Usually this is a common sign of fleas in any animal.

On the fur or the skin of the animal flea dirt can result to black peppered spots. A combination of the flea waste and blood that develops as the flea bites and sucks blood out of the pets is the flea dirt. If one passes a moist towel over the flea dirt it will leave a brownish red stain and therefore if a person is not sure whether the spots are flea dirt they can pass a moist towel over it. Excessive chewing and scratching is another sign that an animal is infested with fleas. An itching sensation on the animal is caused by the saliva that is secreted by the fleas which results to a lot of scratching. Injuries can be caused on the skin of the animal by scratching hence wounds and also flea allergy dermatitis can be caused and other secondary bacterial infections because of the open wounds.
