Dog Care: Keeping your Dog Healthy and Happy
You obviously love your dog and would give him the best care you can to keep him healthy and happy. You feed your dog, walk him, give him baths, and groom him: basic things you do for your dog. You might not be aware but there are a number of things more that you should not neglect. Some mistakes can be bad for your dog’s health and if not given attention soon, it might prove harmful. Here are some of the things you should never neglect.
Dental care is one of the few things dog owners might neglect. A lot of dogs suffer dental diseases at a young age and it is common. There is much more you need to make sure that your dog gets the necessary oral health care beyond what you can do. You need to take him to a vet for a dental check-up to see if he has other problems like tooth decay and broken teeth. Your dog’s dental care should start while he is still a puppy, if you want to avoid serious dental issues when he grows up. There is no need to delay because his mouth will become very prone to disease.
Brushing his teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush protects his teeth and gums from decaying. Start brushing the front teeth gradually and then the gums to ensure that all places are covered.
It comes as a surprise to many that dog owners actually forget about fleas, which is so common but easily preventable. One of the most likely result of flea infestation is flea allergy, which can be caused by even a small infestation. It is important to know what attracts fleas in order to keep them away. Warm and humid environments are what fleas look for, and they avoid cold and dry places. Sometimes warm and humid weather is unavoidable, depending on where you live or what season it is, but there are flea creams and chewy tablets you can buy to prevent fleas from infesting your dog.
There are also natural treatments you can use on normal days. Homemade concoctions and essential oils are also helpful to use as they don’t contain chemicals that can affect your dogs coat.
It is in your dog’s nature that he will dig into any sort of food that you give him. This, however, has led to dog owners feeding their dogs stuff that may be harmful to his health.
Some concern has also been raised with some popular brands on how they process their dog food and what ingredients they put in them. Poor quality of meat, sometimes from sick animals, can sometimes pass as legal in some countries. But even good quality meat, when it passes through intense heat can lose a lot of nutrients before it is completely processed.
Always ask what goes into your dog food.
